Around 20 people were taken to hospital following the incident on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu on Sunday (18 December).
According to the BBC, the turbulence struck shortly before the aircraft – which was carrying 278 passengers and 10 crew – came into land.
In a statement, Hawaiian Airlines reportedly said: "Medical care was provided to several guests and crew members at the airport for minor injuries while some were swiftly transported to local hospitals for further care."
The airline said it will conduct a "thorough investigation" of the aircraft before it returns to service.
