The Foreign Office (FCO) is urging holidaymakers to be vigilant to the danger posed by sharks after a US tourist was killed while snorkelling in the Bahamas.

Carnival has pledged to invest nearly £150 million in the Bahamas

Jordan Lindsay, 21, was snorkelling with her family near Rose Island when she was attacked by three sharks last Wednesday (26 June), the Royal Bahamas Police Force has confirmed.

On Tuesday (2 July), the FCO issued fresh travel advice for the Caribbean island nation in response to an advisory from the Bahamian authorities.

“On 26 June, a fatal shark attack took place in The Bahamas,” said the FCO. “While this is a very rare occurrence, the Bahamian authorities have issued advice urging the public to exercise extreme caution in and around the waters of New Providence, adjacent islands and cays.”
