According to The Telegraph, a number of senior government officials are pushing for the rules to be overhauled and claimed the rapid spread of the Omicron variant has rendered the testing requirement "pointless".
Day 2 PCR tests and the requirement to self isolate until a negative result is received could also be reconsidered.
The UK’s testing stipulations have been in place since 7 December following an increase in concern over the Omicron variant. An update on the travel rules is due on Wednesday (5 January).
Travel industry groups urged the central authority to scrap all remaining travel testing requirements on Wednesday (5 January) due to the high number of Covid cases already present in the UK.
