That was the message from Advantage Travel Partnership chief Julia Lo Bue-Said to sector leaders and organisations, describing Sunak’s appointment and the likely reshuffle of ministers as “another avenue” for the trade to lobby MPs for support.
Lo Bue-Said called on those engaging with backbench party MPs and minsters to “deliver consistent messages” on the issues facing travel businesses across the sector – referencing Advantage’s recent collaboration with Aito.
“We want our partnership to be a really strong voice that helps the whole industry,” she said.
Referring to Transport Select Committee chair Huw Merriman, who has been praised by industry leaders for his understanding of the travel sector and may find himself among Sunak’s new cabinet, Lo Bue-Said said “education is key” when it came to engaging with politicians.
“The more we as an industry are educating all MPs and engaging them on our issues, then the more voices like Huw Merriman we’ll have. He [Merriman] understands the different parts of the section but he’s taken time to engage with us.
“We’re competing for airtime with every other sector and the only way you compete is speaking loudly and you need more voices to be doing that.”
