A veteran of the Royal Observatory, Kerss has appeared on national TV, written several books on astronomy and set up the Stargazing London initiative to deliver training and spark a passion for astronomy.
Kerss will embark on his first voyage to Norway onboard Maud with Hurtigruten from Dover on 20 October 2022, where he will share his knowledge on the northern lights, Arctic sky and the solar system with guests.
From delivering lectures, to inviting guests to the observation deck to witness the sky above, Kerss will also lead excursions such as Hurtigruten’s exclusive visit to the planetarium at the Science Centre in Tromso.
The 15-day astronomy and northern lights expedition cruise from Dover will also depart on 19 January 2023, 11 November 2023, 20 January 2024 and 17 February 2024.
As part of the onboard scientific team, Kerss will also join Hurtiguten’s 12-day Costal Express astronomy voyages in search of the northern lights onboard Richard With and Kong Harald, departing 12 February 2023, 6 December 2023 and 2 February 2024.
Hurtigruten’s existing expedition team includes astronomers Ian Ridpath, John Mason and Sadie Jones, as well as scientists with expertise in nature, wildlife and history.
Anthony Daniels, Hurtigruten’s UK general manager, said: “We are delighted Tom will be joining our upcoming season of astronomy voyages and helping our guests truly immerse themselves in the incredible night skies of Norway.
“We are always seeking new talent to expand and increase our onboard expertise, and Tom is a fantastic addition to our expedition team.”
