During June and July, London City served 640,000 passengers, with more than 300,000 expected to travel in August. And with "some remaining capacity" on several routes, the airport believes it could near the one million mark for the key summer months.
London City said it had remained fully staffed since the start of the summer getaway, and only experienced "small changes" to its schedule owing to the government’s slot amnesty.
"London City’s operation has been largely unaffected through August and airlines have some remaining capacity on key domestic and short haul European routes," it said on Wednesday (3 August).
The airport has welcomed nearly 70% of 2019 passenger traffic over the summer months, with Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Zurich remaining London City’s busiest routes. Ibiza has been City’s strongest leisure route, followed by Florence, Palma, Nice and Malaga.
It is urging August passengers to turn up no more than two hours prior to their flight, and to be prepared in advance to transit through security smoothly. On average, passengers are able to go from the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) to their gate lounge "inside 25 minutes".
“We have made a conscious effort with our airlines to attract more leisure routes and passengers this summer and the fact we could reach close to one million passengers for the period is testament to the resilience of our operation and quality of the passenger experience we offer," said London City chief executive Robert Sinclair.
He urged anyone considering a last-minute getaway to think about London City. "We would love to welcome them," he added.
