The carrier launched the three times a week service on 1 July but will end it on 28 October, the airline has confirmed.
A spokesperson told TTG: “At the moment we are not operating San Francisco beyond this season. However, as always, we keep our network under constant review, so I would never say ‘permanent’ regarding any route, since demand changes.”
San Francisco is well served from Heathrow by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and United but its appeal to tourists has been dented with recent press reports of the city’s growing homelessness issues in its Downtown area.
Norse’s Boston service, which began on 2 September operating five times a week, will also be suspended this winter, returning on 31 March. In addition, Washington Dulles, which began in June, will be suspended from 27 October, resuming on 31 March. Both were originally announced as being year-round.
The airline has also abandoned plans to fly from Gatwick to Kingston this winter but will go ahead with the launch of services to Montego Bay and Barbados in October.
Norse is thought to be considering a Manchester-US service next year, but the spokesperson said there was nothing to announce at this time.
Despite the setbacks, Norse appears to have had a successful first summer in the UK. This week it reported an 86% load factor in August and said it was “well placed” this winter if oil prices continued to increase.
