A £500 million scheme to help fend off a surge in unemployment as furlough ends will be announced today.
The chancellor Rishi Sunak will promise extra support in finding jobs for older workers coming off furlough, including one-to-one support from jobcentres.
He will also extend until 31 January the £3,000 incentive for employers to take on apprentices.
Sunak will detail the support to the Conservative conference in Manchester days after the ending of the furlough scheme on 30 September.
Travel and aviation had the highest number of furloughed staff from all economic sectors.
Government data revealed 46% of agency and operator staff were on the Job Retention Scheme at the end of July, compared to 51% in passenger air transport.
