The Titanic hit an iceberg and sunk in the northern Atlantic around 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, in 1912 on its maiden voyage to the US from Southampton.
The BBC, citing the Boston Coastguard, said a search and rescue operation was under way. A spokesperson for the Coastguard told The Guardian “a small submarine with five persons onboard had gone missing in the vicinity of the Titanic wreck”.
According to its social media, OceanGate Expeditions – one of only a few operators to offer Titanic expeditions – had recently launched an expedition. It hasn’t yet commented on the reports.
