The announcement came as the line cut steel on the second Nova-class ship, Silver Ray, at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg on Wednesday (23 November).

The line cited "the global situation" for its decision to delay Silver Nova’s launch until 14 August 2023 when it will sail round-trip from Venice.

Agents and guests have been informed of the revised launch date, and Silversea has offered travellers a saving of 10% when booking an alternative voyage before 30 November.

Alternatively, they can claim 100% future cruise credit for the total amount paid so far, or a full cash refund.

Roberto Martinoli, Silversea president and chief executive, said the line’s Nova-class ships would "push the boundaries of sustainable cruise travel".

They will use hybrid propulsion, with power coming from fuel cells, batteries and dual-fuel engines fed by liquefied natural gas, ensuring they emit zero emissions in port.

In addition, the ships will feature a horizontal layout and asymmetrical design, with public spaces and suites running the entire length of each ship.

"Silversea has long stood at the forefront of innovation when it comes to environmentally-conscious cruising," said Martinoli. "The launch of the Nova class represents a giant leap forward in this regard, and we are introducing pioneering technologies."

On the delay to Silver Nova’s launch, Martinoli added: "Given the worldwide issues that have affected the construction of Silver Nova, it has been decided to amend her launch date by approximately one month in order to uphold the signature level of experience that our discerning guests have come to expect when travelling with Silversea.”
