The FCDO updated its travel advice on Monday (21 August) ahead of the storm making landfall on Tuesday (22 August). “Follow the advice of local authorities and your tour operator, including any evacuation orders,” said the FCDO.
The severe weather facing parts of the eastern Caribbean is the latest in a string to have prompted updates from the FCDO following major meteorological incidents in California, Mexico and Hawaii.
UK authorities urged holidaymakers along Mexico’s Pacific coast and in southern California to follow any local guidance as Storm Hilary made its way towards the US at the weekend, bringing high winds and heavy rain to major cities such as Los Angeles.
Earlier this month, meanwhile, tourists were told to stay away from the Hawaiian island of Maui owing to fierce wildfires, which burned the historic tourist town of Lahaina to the ground. More than 100 people are known to have died as a result of Hawaii’s wildfires.
More high temperatures are forecast for the southern Mediterranean this week, with many areas of Greece still on high wildfire alert, while in France temperatures are expected to exceed 40C again.
