Manuel Cortes, TSSA general secretary, used a new year message to highlight the plight of the sector.
He said Omicron had “come at a particularly bad time for travel”, occurring just as the peak selling period got under way.
The industry had been “battered by Covid”, he said, adding: “It may fall on deaf ears, but I want to repeat my call for sector specific support and a minister for travel.”
Cortes compared travel to the railways, which he claimed were undergoing “a managed decline” by the government.
“The same can be said of our travel industry,” he added.
