The airline and operator had previously cancelled all flights and holidays to Sri Lanka departing up to and on 15 August.

This has now been extended to all trips departing up to and on 22 August with the Foreign Office continuing to advise against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka.

It is, however, a shorter extension than on previous occasions.

Sri Lanka has appointed a new president after the incumbent, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled the country, while the country is in the process of seeking to install a new government after Gotabaya’s brother, Mahinda Rajapaksa, resigned as prime minister in May.

The upheaval follows months of protesting owing to shortages of basic supplies such as fuel and food.

"Due to the ongoing political and economic instability in Sri Lanka, the Foreign Office has advised against all but essential travel," said Tui.

"As a result, we’ve unfortunately had to cancel all holidays to Sri Lanka departing up to and including 22 August 2022. We will be proactively contacting all impacted customers in departure date order to discuss their options.

"Please note this advice does not apply to customers transiting through Sri Lanka’s international airport and customers currently in resort can continue to enjoy their holiday as planned.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and update customers should there be any further updates. We would like to thank our customers for their understanding at this time. "
