A fresh 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit the region at around 8pm on Monday (20 February). This was followed by a 5.8 aftershock three minutes later.
The BBC reports a three people were killed in the Antakya, Defne and Samandag region as a result of the tremor. Turkey’s health minister said a further 294 people had been injured, 18 of them seriously.
Turkish disaster management agency AFAD subsequently rescinded an earlier tsunami alert after the quake hit the coastal area of Hatay, near Antakya. The Foreign Office has advised those in the impacted areas to continue to follow the advice of national authorities.
Nearly 50,000 are now believed to have died following the earthquakes in south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday 6 February.
