Flights to and from airports in the US north-east have faced delays owing to smoke from wildfires in Canada.
The US Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday (7 June) warned travellers to expect delays at New York’s airports. It said it had slowed traffic to and from the city "due to reduced visibility from wildfire smoke".
The BBC reported delays of up to two hours at New York’s LaGuardia and Newark International airports. New York JFK said in a tweet it was currently experiencing arrival and departure delays "due to low visibility caused by smoke conditions in the region".
There have been knock-on effects for inbound flights to Philadelphia, as well as operations at Toronto’s Pearson International airport. Around 400 wildfires are understood to be ablaze across Canada, predominantly in eastern areas, with the smoke drifting south to the US.
