The sanctuary’s exact location has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to open in 2020. The National Aquarium has begun a three-year rehabilitation programme to prepare the cetaceans for the move after it took the decision to close its dolphin tank. This includes encouraging the creatures to drink water so that their system can be flushed if they eat the wrong food, raising their tank temperature to 26C and teaching them to swim on to stretchers for their journey south.
