At least 39 people have been killed after two trains collided near Adamuz in the Cordoba province of Andalusia, the BBC reports.
Initial investigations suggest a Madrid-bound train derailed and crossed onto the southbound tracks, hitting an oncoming train.
The Foreign Office has updated its advice for Spain following the incident, warning of "significant disruption to rail services between Madrid and Andalusia".
"On 18 January, two high‑speed trains collided near Adamuz in the province of Cordoba in Andalusia, southern Spain," said the FCDO.
"All high‑speed services between Madrid and Cordoba, Seville, Malaga, Granada and Huelva [are] suspended. Services between Madrid and Cádiz, Algeciras and Granada will also be affected."
