The proposal would see vessels using the King George V Dock in Govan, next to the Braehead shopping complex. Currently, ships dock at a cruise terminal at Greenock, about 25 miles downriver, operated by Peel Ports.
Citing the leader of the Scottish Conservatives Russell Findlay, the Scottish Daily Express reports the idea “has the potential to bring in a huge number of visitors” and rejuvenate the riverside. Findlay said the plan had his party’s "full support".
The proposed area is close to Glasgow’s West End, across the river from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Three Azamara ships were berthed there during the pandemic.
However, Peel Ports appeared to play down the proposal. It told the newspaper: "The potential for cruise ships to go further down the Clyde has been discussed in principle many times over the years.
“The Port of Greenock remains the Clyde’s cruise terminal, following the major investments into the facilities over recent years."
