Hamburg is a contemporary and ever-changing harbour city and one of Germany’s cultural hubs on the north coast of the country. Even with only one or two days in Hamburg it’s easy to see explore most of the city in a short space of time.
Hamburg is a unique city, unlike most European cities I have visited over the years. It is not your typical German city with their fairy-tale cobbled streets leading to historic market squares. Whilst other German cities like Berlin or Munich often steal the spotlight, Hamburg is a hidden gem with a rich history and very proud people, ‘Hamburgers’.
From Speicherstadt, the Unesco World Heritage warehouse district, with its tales of the past, to the nightlife of St Pauli and the Reeperbahn, where the unknown young Beatles played some of their first gigs, this fast-paced city brims with energy. It offers the perfect balance for a short yet exciting city break, all year round.
I have been lucky enough to have visited this amazing city numerous times over the years working for P&O Cruises, travelling solo and also with my family and it definitely should be on everyone’s list for their next city to explore.
Hamburg serves as a great stop for cruising with many travellers opting to spend one or two days there as part of their cruise itineraries. Whilst one day in Hamburg never feels like quite enough, it is enough time to cover the main sights, taste some delicious local dishes and immerse yourself in the charm of this old harbour city.
Docking at HafenCity the city centre is only a short 20 to 30-minute walk away, however shuttle busses are provided throughout the day from the modern cruise terminal. The journey takes 10 minutes and the bus drops you in the centre, right next to the magnificent Rathaus, Hamburg’s famous town hall. This is a great starting point to discover this beautiful city.
Key attractions
Nestled in the heart of Hamburg, the Binnenalster, established in 1250, stands as a vast body of water. Its focal point, the Alster Fountain, graces the scene with picturesque allure, featuring a water spout that soars up to an impressive 60 meters.
The magnificent Rathaus was completed in 1897 and is located only a short walk from the Binnenalster. Its stunning architecture is sure to catch your eye as you enter the main square. Hamburg’s parliament and senate assemble here but it is also open to the public if you want a peek inside.
However the main square really comes to life in the winter and especially December. This is where the city’s biggest Christmas Market takes place. The whole square is filled with an array of beautiful market stalls, perfect for picking up Christmas presents and souvenirs. Be sure to enjoy a mulled wine or a traditional Bratwurst, while marvelling at the beautiful 50ft Christmas tree in the centre of the square.
Another memorable activity I recommend is visiting St Peter or St Petri’s Church. This 11th century church a short distance from the Rathaus is Hamburg’s oldest church! You can climb the 544 steps up to the tower’s viewing platform for breathtaking panoramic views of the city and lakes. It costs just four euros to climb the tower, and I would highly recommend it.
Food stops
After all those steps, you definitely need somewhere for a coffee and cake break. Die Rцsterei Coffeum is just a short walk down the street from St Peter’s Church and for me is the ideal spot for a coffee stop. There is a covered outdoor seating area on the corner with heaters so it’s a great spot to people-watch whilst enjoying a hot drink and a traditional German strudel.
Or if you’re looking for somewhere inviting for lunch I would recommend Restaurant Franziskaner. This cosy traditional Bavarian tavern with a wooden-clad interior is the perfect place to refuel whilst exploring the city. It’s very central, just 10-15 minutes from the Rathaus and the shuttle drop-off. I heartily urge you to try the sausage, sauerkraut and mashed potato, and finish off with a slice of warm apple strudel for dessert. After a lovely lunch and a little shopping and sightseeing, you can head back to the ship and enjoy the rest of your cruise.
