Most evenings my phone pings with chatty WhatsApp messages from our colleagues in Cuba. They are fun and friendly messages, checking in on UK events, the latest football stories and family news. They are lovely to receive; however, they hide the sad reality that life is very tough for Cubans right now.

The situation in Cuba is dire. Food is running out, there are daily power cuts, and the increasingly severe sanctions have scared off international companies from operating there. Cuba specialist Matthew O'Sullivan desperately hopes recent high-level talks between Cuba and the United States can reverse the island's fortunes.
