Airbus and Zodiac Aerospace are working together to develop passenger sleeping berths in the aircraft’s cargo holds.
The passenger modules would be interchangeable with cargo containers during a typical turnaround and would be ready for A330 use by 2020.
In addition, the viability of the scheme is also being considered for the A350 XWB.
Airbus cabin and cargo programme head Geoff Pinner said: “This approach to commercial air travel is a step change towards passenger comfort.
"We have already received very positive feedback from several airlines on our first mock-ups.
"We are pleased to partner with Zodiac Aerospace on this project which will introduce a new passenger experience and add value for airlines."
