Bangkok has been named the best-value destination for a long-haul city break, narrowly beating Far East rivals Tokyo and Beijing.
Post Office Travel Money’s Long Haul City Costs Barometer measured the value of 10 global cities with flight times of six or more hours from the UK, including Dubai, Cape Town, Singapore and Boston.
The barometer analysed the cost for 11 typical city break expenses, including meals and drinks, sightseeing, airport transfers and three nights’ stay in four-star accommodation. At £317 for the 11 items, Bangkok prices were £14 lower than those in Tokyo (£331) and £20 cheaper than Beijing (£337).
Post Office Travel Money largely attributed this to the value of hotel stays in the Thai capital versus its Japanese counterpart, with a three-night stay in four-star accommodation averaging £177 in Bangkok, just under £100 less than Tokyo.
Tokyo however, boasted the cheapest prices “by far” for the other 10 items used as its benchmark, Post Office Travel Money reported.
Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: “Long-haul city breaks have been identified by Abta as one of the big new travel trends.
“With the autumn season for such trips on the horizon, we chose to compare prices in 10 cities that attract British visitors for standalone city breaks or as stopover destinations. Cities in the Far East are looking like unbeatable value. We advise people considering a long-haul city break to do some homework before booking. Compare meal and drink prices as these are costs that tourists cannot avoid on a city break trip and over the course of a three-day stay they will soon mount up.”
