Finnair will offer three flights a week from Helsinki, with tickets on sale from 5 April, when an exact launch date will be specified.
The carrier said Mumbai was the latest in a series of changes being made to schedules as the airline adapts to the closure of Russia’s airways. This has meant costly diversions of polar routes to destinations including Japan and South Korea.
Ole Orver, Finnair chief commercial officer, said: “We continue to serve our key Asian destinations despite the longer routings caused by Russian airspace closure."
Finnair is flying daily to Bangkok, Delhi, Singapore and Tokyo, plus three weekly flights to Seoul, twice a week to Hong Kong and weekly to Shanghai.
Other services to Japan have been suspended. Finnair is also postponing the start of its new route to Busan, South Korea’s second city.
