Germany recorded its seventh consecutive year of growth in 2016, reaching more than 80 million overnight stays by international visitors.

News comes after Angela Merkel called for an EU-wide ban on British arrivals this summer amid fears of the Delta variant

Figures from the German Federal Statistical Office have revealed 80.8 million overnights - growth of 1.4% over 2015.

Europe remained the country’s largest source market, with a share of 73.7% (up 1.9%). Visitors from Britain rose 1%.

Iris Gleicke, German federal government commissioner for tourism and parliamentary state secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy said: “Destination Germany is enjoying continued popularity with international visitors. We have achieved record highs for incoming tourism, which reflects the strength of our industry”.
