The third largest shareholder in InterContinental Hotels Group has said he hopes it will “stay as an independent company”.

Dutch billionaire John Fentener van Vlissingen upped his stake in the listed company last week.

“I leave it to the management to do whatever they think is good to do,” van Vlissingen told The Sunday Telegraph.

He said that he expected further consolidation in the hotels industry. Last month Marriott International announced a deal to buy Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

IHG declined to comment to The Sunday Telegraph.
