That was the call of Sunvil boss Chris Wright, who said the clarification was the “biggest thing” ministers could do to support travel firms given “no sign” of financial support on the horizon.
Rumours and predictions have swirled in the national press as to the lengths Boris Johnson will go to curb the spread of the Omicron variant over the festive break.
A number of reports have suggested the prime minister will look to reinstate measures similar to Step 2 restrictions first introduced as part of the lockdown roadmap earlier this year.
They include maintaining a ban on international holidays, with a potential £5,000 fine for unnecessary overseas travel, first announced by home secretary Priti Patel in January.
Wright said there was “no reason” for such rules on travel to be reintroduced given the UK’s high Covid case figures.
He tweeted his view on Tuesday (21 December) after chancellor Rishi Sunak once again snubbed the travel sector as he announced a £1bn support package for hospitality businesses.
Reacting to the news, Wright said he was “at a loss as to what travel needs to do” to gain financial help from government
He said chief executive of UKHospitality Kate Nicholls “should be applauded” for her lobbying efforts but added the trade body had a “much easier sell” as it was speaking “for the whole sector”.
“Travel doesn’t have one voice [but it’s] no one organisation’s fault,” he said.
