Peru: More airports reopen amid ongoing political protests

More regional airports in Peru have reopened after days of anti-government protests, which have caused "severe" travel delays across the country.

According to the UK Foreign Office, Cusco, Juliaca and Ayacucho airports have now reopened, after the country’s Arequipa airport restarted operations earlier this week.

However, commercial flight operations across the country continue to be disrupted and limited in some instances.

Last week, hundreds of stranded tourists were evacuated from the Machu Picchu region after rail operations serving the Unesco World Heritage site and Inca Trail were partially restored.

Travel around the country still remains challenging, and the FCDO continues to advise those arriving in Lima that travel to some parts of the country "may not be possible".

A spokesperson for the FCDO said: "The political situation is volatile. Protests are unpredictable and can escalate quickly and include violence."
