Scotland’s finance secretary Kate Forbes made the announcement as part of her budget on Thursday (10 February) when she revealed several initiatives to help the country’s travel and tourism sectors.
“We will also provide £3.5 million for outbound travel agents that have been impacted by near-continuous restrictions on international travel throughout the pandemic,” said Forbes.
Jacqueline Dobson, president of Barrhead Travel, called the decision “excellent news” after the industry spent months lobbying the Scottish government.
“It is a timely announcement: while travel businesses are enjoying high demand for holidays, the industry is still feeling the pain from the last two years and will continue to do so until the actual departure volume mirrors close to pre-pandemic levels,” added Dobson.
“For many travel businesses – particularly independent agents who form the backbone of local high streets – these grants will give much-needed breathing space and allow them to turn their attention to working towards a strong summer recovery.
“Sunnier days are coming – but the industry must retain lines of communication with local government because there are still many challenges to overcome this year.
“The flaws in the distribution of the ARG (Additional Restrictions Grant) funding, for example, is concerning and we will continue to advocate for change and fair financial support.”
The Scottish government will also provide £7.5 million in extra funding for inbound tour operators.
“We know that international tourists spend more when they visit, so supporting this sector helps drive recovery in retail and tourism right across Scotland,” said Forbes.
