Thousands evacuated as Tenerife hit by worst wildfire for 40 years

Thousands of people have been evacuated from parts of Tenerife as what is thought to be the worst wildfire the Canary Islands has experienced for 40 years continues to burn, heading towards capital Santa Cruz.

According to reports, more than 7,500 people have been evacuated or ordered to stay indoors after the blaze ripped through 2,600 hectares of land.

More than 250 firefighters, alongside military emergency crews and 17 aircraft, are thought to be battling the fire, which broke out in the north-east of the island on Tuesday (15 August).
