Brett put his name forward earlier this month to represent principal members with turnovers of up to £50 million, forcing a ballot which closed on Thursday (17 August).
Abta on Friday (18 August) confirmed Gardiner, who has sat on the board for a number of years, had been re-elected. Gardiner is founder and managing director of schools and education trip specialist Diverse World.
"We really value the work Jamie has done on behalf of all members during his six years on the board and look forward to continuing to benefit from his insight and expertise," said Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer.
Tanzer added: “Graeme Brett is a valued Abta member and, while he may not be joining the Abta board, we’re pleased Abta will still be able to capitalise on Graeme’s experience through his existing position on the council of regions as chair of the North East region."
During the pandemic, Brett co-founded agent-led campaign group Target – Travel Agent Reform Group Engaged Together – with Pole Travel’s Jill Waite, providing vocal opposition to the government’s treatment of the travel industry, and also of the sector’s own perceived shortfalls.
Brett said: "I feel it is very important for a strong democratic organisation to have elections for its board and I hope we have encouraged more members to take part in Abta events and activities.
"I have great respect for everyone who is prepared to give up time from their business for the benefit of others, and wish Jamie every success in the role and know he will be a strong voice for small businesses.
"Hopefully we have encouraged Abta members to become more involved in Abta activities and events such as attending regional meetings, conference calls and training.
The vote follows Britaly Travel director Daniele Broccoli’s re-election to the Abta board earlier this month representing members with retail turnover of less than £20 million a year.
Henbury Travel owner and managing director Richard Slater, meanwhile, will join the board in September.
