Picture the perfect Swiss scene and what do you see? In fact, we’ll probably be able to guess – trains trundling through picturesque Alpine scenery and traversing dramatic viaducts? Yes, we thought so.
That train you’re dreaming up is likely to be the Bernina Express, one of Switzerland’s most sought-after rail journeys. The panoramic rail route is enjoyed by travellers all year round: in winter, passengers can get cosy in heated carriages and marvel at the snow-blanketed mountains, while summer brings vibrant green meadows and sparkling glacial lakes – with some services even featuring open-air carriages.
One of Bernina’s journey highlights is crossing the Landwasser Viaduct – a spectacular, 65-metre-high, six-arch marvel, constructed from limestone. It’s an impressive feat of engineering, set among the most magical natural setting, whatever time of year.
Now, this iconic landmark has become much more than just a fleeting sight from a train window, but the centre of an immersive adventure region that visitors are now invited to slow down and explore – welcome to Landwasser World!
New perspectives
Designed to enrich Switzerland travel itineraries, Landwasser World has been split into five different ‘adventure worlds’: railway, culture, agriculture, forest and water. Each ‘world’ helps travellers explore the Unesco-listed viaduct and its surrounds from a unique and themed perspective. Whether your clients are photographers, nature lovers or rail enthusiasts, there’ll be a ‘world’ to excite a range of your clientele.
'Railway world' experiences include a ride on the Landwasser Express, where passengers can learn about the significance of the Landwasser viaduct on their way up to arguably its best view point. Additionally, there’s a historical train ride with vintage carriages that transports guests from Davos Platz to Filisur, showcasing stunning Alpine landscapes en route. Finally, the viaduct shuttle is an open-carriage ride that crosses the 65-metre high viaduct before reaching a new stop, located steps away from the spectacular Henning viewing platform – yet another incredible perspective of the structure .
Unique experiences
But that’s far from all: at Landwasser World, visitors can walk a riverside trail with interactive stations that explain and celebrate the integral role of water in the region; ride the Darlux chairlift over spectacular forest scenery and up to La Diala restaurant, and even visit an organic farm – Las Sorts grows 50 different varieties of mountain potatoes and sells its own products, while Farsox demonstrates its organic growing methods and even offers overnight accommodation in a teepee.
Sitting on a valley hillside near to Landwasser Viaduct is the historical village of Filisur, another part of the Landwasser World experience. With the assistance of an interactive app, visitors can go on a self-guided tour and learn the stories of its 14 Engadin houses, their historical significance and their purpose today.
More cultural experiences are on offer in the nearby railway village of Bergun. The Bergun Local Museum is located in a preserved 17th-century building, and showcases family life in the village over the past 300 years, along with a true-to-scale replica of the Bergun-Preda railway line.
Although the Landwasser viaduct is a Bernina Express highlight, travellers don’t need to ride the iconic route to experience Landwasser World. Your clients can stay within Graubuenden – for example, the nearby resort of Davos – and simply take a trip to this exciting new adventure region.
