Women in Travel CIC founded its male allyship programme in 2021, backed by 30 industry leaders from some of travel’s biggest brands.
Allyship is the active and intentional practice of supporting and advocating for members of marginalised groups.
Women in Travel says allyship is particularly important in travel, tourism and hospitality because women, people of colour and members of the LGBTQ+ community are often underrepresented in leadership positions, and face significant barriers to advancement.
The organisation believes male allies and mentors can play a critical role supporting women’s progress in the workplace by providing opportunities, and increasingly visibility, confidence and self-belief.
Allies, meanwhile, benefit from gender intelligence, develop diversity, equity and inlusion, allyship and mentorship skills, and external and internal visibility.
Ahead of International Women’s Day (8 March), TTG invited Women in Travel founder and chief executive Alessandra LoTufo Alonso to reflect on the programme, and male ally Adolfo Penzato from Intrepid Travel on his experiences from the programme.
