Hurricane Gabrielle was bearing down on the Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic on Thursday (25 September), prompting a Foreign Office alert.
"There may be disruption to services due to hurricane force winds and possible coastal flooding," said the FCDO.
Travellers to the destination are advised to check in with their travel provider for updates, monitor information from the US National Hurricane Center and heed any advice from local authorities.
In an alert issued on Friday morning, the National Hurricane Center said: "Gabrielle is expected to produce tropical storm conditions, with gusts to hurricane force, across the central and southeastern Azores this morning, with hurricane-force winds possible at higher elevations.
"A dangerous storm surge is expected to produce significant coastal flooding in areas of onshore winds in the Azores. The surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves."
Posting to Twitter/X, also on Friday morning, the UK Met Office said: A recent wind gust of 96mph was recorded on Ilha do Faial as Post-Tropical Cyclone #Gabrielle passes directly over the #Azores."
