As the owner of World Class Adventures, I’ve been fortunate to visit some incredible destinations, but Mauritius has always been a dream. Thanks to TTG and Sunlife, I finally experienced this stunning island for the first time – and my first stay at a Sunlife property made it all the more memorable.
While I often recommend Mauritius as an alternative to the Maldives for honeymooners, I now feel even more confident suggesting it to a wider range of clients – from families to solo travellers.
First impressions
From the moment I arrived, the five-star Long Beach Resort on the island’s north-east coast exuded a vibrant energy that immediately drew me in. The sleek, modern design, combined with the lush surroundings, felt really harmonious. What stood out the most was the warmth of the staff. Their genuine smiles and the thoughtful touch of a welcome massage set the tone for an unforgettable stay.
Waking up each morning to the sound of tropical birds rather than an alarm clock was an added gift, immersing me in the beauty of Mauritius from the start.
On the hunt for treasure
Sunlife’s Island Treasure Hunt Adventure was the highlight of my trip. This treasure hunt was my own idea, which helped me win Sunlife’s competition with TTG – and our holiday in Mauritius – so it was incredible to experience it for myself. I designed the treasure hunt to reflect Sunlife’s #ComeAlive philosophy, and the experience was immersive, sustainable, and deeply personal. For guests, I hope it will be educational, and offer an opportunity for quality family time, while allowing them to explore the island independently.
One memorable stop was the resort’s chef’s garden and beehives. Seeing how Long Beach grows its own produce and harvests honey from its own bees reinforced their commitment to sustainability. It was a chance to discover a range of ingredients that were behind the vibrant flavours in many of the meals I enjoyed.
Another clue took us to the lively Flacq Market, where we got a taste of local life. From the colourful produce to the friendly vendors, it was an authentic glimpse into Mauritius’ culture. Each clue along the journey brought us closer to the island’s soul – culminating in a quiet, secluded beach where the beauty of Mauritius truly came alive.
The plan is to roll out the Island Treasure Hunt Adventure across Sunlife’s portfolio, which includes Sugar Beach and La Pirogue. It is a complimentary activity that takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and clues are displayed on the Goosechase app, so it can be completed at guests’ own pace.
A foodie’s paradise
Dining at Long Beach was a sensory delight. While every meal was exceptional, Hasu, the resort’s Japanese restaurant, was a clear standout. I wasn’t surprised to learn that it ranks among the top three Japanese restaurants in all of Africa. The delicate sushi, expertly prepared dishes, and refined atmosphere made it an unforgettable experience.
Breakfasts were equally indulgent, with tropical fruits, warm pastries, and pancakes drizzled in local honey. Another highlight was lunch at La Cabana on the beach, where fresh seafood paired with ocean views made for the perfect midday retreat.
Personal sanctuary
Our room was a peaceful haven. With natural light streaming through the modern space and a private terrace offering stunning views, it became my favourite place to unwind. Starting my mornings with a coffee on the terrace, surrounded by the sound of waves and birdsong, felt like pure bliss.
Thoughtful touches, such as a curated welcome gift and luxurious toiletries, elevated the experience even further.
Authentic entertainment
The #ComeAlive ethos was evident in every activity at Long Beach. Snorkelling in the protected coral lagoon was a personal favourite, with calm, crystal-clear waters revealing a kaleidoscope of marine life.
The piazza became a special spot for me, particularly one evening when I watched a traditional Mauritian music and dance performance. Normally, this kind of entertainment isn’t my thing, but the atmosphere was captivating. The gentle rhythms, the soft glow of lanterns, and the peaceful energy of the evening made it truly magical. That evening in the piazza, under the stars, surrounded by music and dancing, was my standout moment. It was a perfect blend of culture, connection, and calm – an experience that will stay with me forever.
#ComeAlive philosophy
This trip has completely transformed the way I’ll sell Mauritius to my clients. Long Beach isn’t just a resort – it’s a destination in its own right. The resort’s commitment to sustainability, innovative dining, and immersive experiences make it a perfect choice for families, couples, and solo travellers.
I’ll also be sharing Sunlife’s #ComeAlive philosophy with clients. Whether they’re after adventure, relaxation, or cultural discovery, Mauritius offers something for everyone. It’s not just a holiday – it’s an opportunity to create moments that last a lifetime.
