Airberlin has filed a provisional insolvency proceeding in self administration in order to run its business as normal.
The airline made the filing at the local court of Berlin-Charlottenburg today.
In doing so it has ensured that all aircraft currently operated by airberlin under a wet lease agreement for Eurowings and Austrian Airlines will continue to do so.
The move is part of ongoing restructuring efforts of the airlines which are being supported by Lufthansa and the German government
Lufthansa is already in negotiations with airberlin to take-over parts of the airberlin Group and is exploring the possibility of hiring additional staff.
The negotiations are expected to be concluded soon.
