Data published today by travel insurance firm AllClear shows the number of over 55s choosing to go away on holiday has gone up to 66% – a 16% increase on last year’s levels – while the overall number of UK adults has surged to 78%.
According to figures, beach holidays are still a favourite for most Brits, as demand has gone up to 43% over the past year, followed by city breaks (29%), villa holidays (14%) and romantic breaks (11%).
For older customers, beaches are still a must, as they were chosen by 34% of respondents, followed by city breaks. Pool holidays and cruises also proved to be a fan favourite, with 19% and 10% of Brits choosing them.
In terms of destinations, the research has shown the Mediterranean has returned to be the dominant holiday hotspot, as it has been chosen by more than a third of Britons, while the Caribbean has doubled its popularity compared to 2021.
“Most people have been through a challenging few years – with the isolation and loss of the Covid era compounded by a cost-of-living crisis and economic hardship,” said chief executive Chris Rolland.
“People want to get away and - while some may need to do it on a budget - the desire for a break and spending quality time with loved ones is top of the priority list this summer.”
The data reflects research published by Barclays earlier this week, which shows that Brits continue to prioritise spending on overseas holidays, with airline spend soaring by 33.5%.
