Peel Group, which owns Doncaster Sheffield, has started a six-week strategic review into the airport’s future after Wizz Air’s decision to suddenly axe flights earlier this summer. This led Peel Group to say the airport “may no longer be commercially viable” and could close following its review.
MPs and mayors in South Yorkshire, including former Labour leader Ed Miliband, have written to Peel Group chairman John Whittaker calling for the company to extend the consultation period until the end of 2022 to “enable meaningful engagement and consideration of options”.
The politicians added they were “disappointed” that Peel’s consultation period was launched with “little notice” and that it was only running for six weeks during the summer.
“Peel Group should outline all of the options they are open to exploring for the future of the airport, including alternative ownership and airport operation models to help parties understand the potential future options and the economic value these could bring to the area,” said the politicians in their letter.
“We require your continued engagement to find a pathway to secure a locally led future for the airport.”
