2. Fill up the trains again

The pandemic saw trains run empty, and with many continuing to work at least partly from home, rail passenger numbers remain down.

Meanwhile, the government wants us to use our cars less, while flying domestically is increasingly frowned on for environmental reasons. Yet we still have the highest rail fares in Europe, often on trains that have many spare seats.

It just does not make sense to have such prohibitively high fares when demand could so easily be stimulated by lowering them, with benefits to consumers, the economy and the environment.

4. Put Air Passenger Duty to good use

Airlines and the public would be much more amenable to Air Passenger Duty if it was used specifically to help the industry become greener. It was conceived as a "green" tax, after all.

A simple move would be to divert funds towards the development of sustainable aviation fuel and other alternatives, with the government facing pressure to do more to support a fledgling SAF industry in the UK.

6. Stop airports forcing passengers through duty free

Moreso than in most countries, most of the UK’s major airports seem increasingly to regard themselves as mini shopping malls. Seemingly every airport thinks it’s clever to make passengers snake their way through duty free to reach departures.

It isn’t. It just aggravates travellers, particularly those who are late or have mobility issues. Please make airports provide a "fast-track" option – and don't let them charge us for it either.
