The ban on devices such as laptops on flights from Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Tunisia means delicate and expensive items now have to be placed in the hold and processed through airports, increasing the risk of damage or the device being lost.
Under the new government restrictions, phones, computers, kindles and tablets larger than 16cm long, 9.3cm wide and 1.5cm deep are no longer allowed in the cabin due to concerns that they could conceal a terrorist device.
The ban on these items applies to flights inbound to the UK, but not outbound. It follows a similar move by US authorities, which have imposed restrictions on flights from eight Middle East states.
Paul Paddock, Holiday Extras’ head of insurance, said: “Airline security is integral to the safety of passengers, and it is essential for us to ensure that customers can travel with the peace of mind that their belongings are covered.
“Subject to the usual policy cover limits we are pleased to be able to extend our cover to include items that are placed in the hold of aircraft for all flights affected by this change.”
