Saltcoats-based Frasers Travel, which was founded in 1986, on Tuesday (18 August) confirmed in a post to its Facebook page it was no longer in business.
"We regret to inform you Frasers Travel Ltd has today ceased trading," the post read. "We would like to thank all our past clients for their loyalty and support."
Abta said bookings made via the agency should go ahead, with the relevant tour operator becoming the direct point of contact for customers.
The agency described itself on its website as a "long-established local travel agency" serving customers in Saltcoats and across the wider Ayrshire region.
It offered everything from "low-cost flights" and short-haul holiday packages to long-haul travel and tailor-made holidays.
Fraser McCallum and Julie McCallum are listed on Companies House as the business's directors.
In its most recent accounts, filed last October for the year to the end of April 2025, the agency said it was still suffering from the lasting effects of the Covid pandemic.
These, it said, included a significant drop in demand and revenues, as well as cancellations owing to a drop in consumer confidence.
However, despite recording a "small profit" during the 2024/25 reporting period, the statement said there remained "significant doubt" about the business's ability to continue as a going concern.
The agency said this remained the case even after securing government support, increasing share capital, and considering a change of ownership as part of a long-term recovery plan.
The agency had also been active on social media in the hours before the announcement, posting holiday deals just three hours before it confirmed that it had ceased trading.
The circumstances surrounding the closure prompted comments from staff and customers on social media. Staff member Sharon McDade, responding to a comment from a customer, said: "Staff in shop didn’t know. We were working as normal and got informed we were closing in the afternoon."
Rebecca Murray said the business had been a feature of the town "for years" and had helped "many, many families" make memories.
Ruth Allen added: "We have always had great service from you [Frasers] and hope you are able to get another job soon."
