"Serious security incidents" were reported in the Mexican state of Jalisco in the days following El Mencho's death at the weekend, which spread to other areas of the country, prompting the FCDO to strengthen its travel advice.
The advice made specific reference to incidents in Oaxaca and the state of Quintana Roo, home to tourist hotspots including Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, as well as in the states of Michoacan, Guerrero, Nayarit, Sinaloa and Baja California.
The FCDO on Wednesday (25 February) said the security situation beyond Jalisco state had now "returned to normal" with no further road blocks or clashes reported, while flights to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta – both in Jalisco – have resumed.
Detailed and specific FCDO advice advising against all but essential travel to parts of 11 Mexican states remains in place. "You should read thoroughly the UK travel advice for Mexico, including on safety and security, and note that we advise against all but essential travel to specific areas of Mexico," read the update.
"If you are in Jalisco state, monitor local media and follow the advice of local authorities, including any shelter in place instructions. Also consider keeping friends and family updated about your location and well-being.
"Flights to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airports have resumed, though there remains the possibility of cancellations and changes to flight schedules. Check with your airline to confirm your flight status and schedule. Only travel to the airport if you have a confirmed flight and it is safe to do so."
