The airline will base three aircraft at Marrakech from next spring, saying this will cement its position as the city’s second-largest carrier, with four million seats on offer.
Chief executive Kenton Jarvis said: “There is no doubt Morocco is a key market for easyJet – we are the largest carrier to Morocco from the UK and from Switzerland [and] Morocco is our fastest growing market outside Europe and a major destination for our easyJet holidays customers.
"With this new development and the launch of our base in Marrakech, we will expand our leisure and business offer to Morocco from more destinations across Europe than ever before.”
EasyJet's "long-term" partnership with the Moroccan National Tourism Office will create “up to one hundred direct and thousands of indirect” jobs, the airline said.
In addition, having aircraft based in Morocco will enable easyJet to connect the country to more markets in Europe and unlock opportunities at constrained airports.
EasyJet will operate 46 routes to Morocco next year, including new services from Marrakech to Hamburg, Lille and Strasbourg. It is also planning a Geneva-Tangier route. It promised increased frequencies to “multiple existing routes” in 2026.
The carrier will operate to Marrakech from 24 destinations. It also flies to Agadir, Rabat, Essaouira and, since this year, Tangier.
Morocco has ambitious plans for its tourism industry, saying it wants to break into the world’s top 10 destination list. However, to do this, it must double its current 17.4 million visitors.
It hopes the 2030 Fifa World Cup, which it is co-hosting with Spain and Portugal, will be a springboard for this ambition.
