According to The Independent, gusts of wind are pushing flames through pine forests near the capital, which caused authorities to issue evacuation orders on Monday (17 July).
Elsewhere, Italy is expected to see temperatures of up to 50C degrees with Sicily and Sardinia predicted to record highest-ever temperatures in Europe on Tuesday (18 July).
The anticyclone – which has been dubbed Charon – is expected to last until August and has advanced into the Mediterranean.
The UK Foreign Office updated its travel advisory to Spain on Monday (17 July) to reflect the soaring temperatures, advising Brits to check with their travel provider before travelling.
According to the BBC, a "heat dome" over the US south-west has led to extreme heat warnings across the country, with temperatures expected to reach 47.2C in Las Vegas. Heat stroke alerts are also in place for Tokyo and five nearby areas.
Despite the heat, the Advantage Travel Partnership claimed on Monday (17 July) travel demand is showing no sign of slowing down.
