Co-founders Radha Vyas and Lee Thompson took the decision after auditing how the company retains talent, finding employees felt pay decisions were being made inconsistently, slowing its ability to scale the team.
Additionally, they found keeping pay secret created mistrust among colleagues, and was inconsistent with the business labelling role as having a competitive salary.
The calculator benchmarks all Flash Pack roles against salary data from 3,000 similar start-ups. All Flash Pack vacancies will now have public salary bands and "option grants" to address current and potential employees’ salary expectations.
The operator has also introduced levelling conversations with its current team members to ensure they’re clear on their current pay, and to give them the opportunity to discuss their career ambitions and next steps.
The solo travel specialist said it hoped the introduction of the calculator would help employees “feel heard and valued”, and contribute to creating a company culture built on “trust, honesty and openness”.
"The pandemic sparked many positive conversations around workplace satisfaction," said Flash Pack. "However, secrecy around salaries still persists. This is particularly salient in the travel industry, which still lags behind other sectors when it comes to diversity and inclusion.
"Failing to be open about pay processes not only creates insecurity, it also aggravates gender and ethnicity pay gaps. Flash Pack aims to set a new industry standard for pay transparency that they hope will revolutionise the industry."
