Prime minister Theresa May’s decision last week to call a snap general election on June 8 came as a shock – not only for the British public but also for the majority of her party.
Now, with just six weeks until the country goes to the polls, the major political parties are desperately scrabbling to put together policies and manifestos they had previously assumed they would have until May 2020 to formulate. Labour, for example, had been asking supporters for policy ideas as part of its Agenda 2020 initiative in expectation of a vote in three years’ time.
With this background, we will have to wait at least a week or two before the parties start publishing their official policies. Given the lack of time, some commentators have suggested that much of their content could simply be “pasted” from their 2015 general election manifestos.
When approached by TTG, a press officer for one of the parties admitted that it was in “a bit of a flux” ahead of launching its election platform and could not confirm precise policies yet. In the meantime, TTG has provided a snapshot of the major parties’ current positions (if they have them) on the most important issues for the travel industry, which should at least give some clues about what is likely to feature in their manifestos:
