The travel giant said the move followed changes within the business but said that those that drive volume would be rewarded, although it is understood there will be some reduction.
Stefanie Berk, product & yield director, Thomas Cook UK & Ireland said: “We recognise the importance of third-party distribution, which forms part of our plans for the foreseeable future.
“However, we have made significant changes to our business in recent times, such as the realignment of our principal brands and introduction of a new City Breaks programme.
“In line with these changes, the time is now right to adjust commission rates for third party agents and place a new emphasis on driving up retail partners’ performance and rewarding them for volume.”
Cook had won precise from independent agents, particularly with through its commitment to price parity. It remains to be seen how its new stance on commission plays out in the market.
Andrew Stark, managing director of The Global Travel Group confirmed the consortium was in discussions with Thomas Cook on the matter. “We met with the business last week as we regularly do and we had some discussions, which remain ongoing.”
