EU plays down prospect of long-term exemptions from new biometric border checks for Brits

The European Commission has played down the prospect of long-term exemptions from the EU's new biometric border checks for UK travellers after intimating Greece's temporary suspension of the EU Entry-Exit System (EES) is unlikely to be replicated across Europe at scale or for significant periods of time.

Travel has long been lobbying for respite as the new rules bed in; Abta has called for the EU and member states to lean on existing contingency measures more readily, while the Advantage Travel Partnership has said there must be provision for the checks to be suspended during moments of peak demand.
