This €2 billion investment in next-generation trains isn’t just an upgrade in technology, it’s a signal the continent is reimagining how we move, explore and connect.
In June, the operator revealed plans to launch direct train services from London to Germany and Switzerland.
Perhaps the most powerful element of this expansion is what it represents – infrastructure finally keeping pace with travellers' demand for greener, more connected journeys.
What’s striking is how much the mindset around flight-free travel has shifted. For years, taking the train was seen as a slower, more complicated compromise.
However, at Byway, we see that perception changing rapidly. Bookings have risen by 80% compared with 2024, while the number of new customers coming through word of mouth has doubled.
People aren’t just booking more flight-free travel - they’re sharing the impact and inspiring friends to travel in ways that feel better for both themselves and the planet.
'Choosing the lower-carbon option doesn't mean giving anything up'
Expanding the Eurostar fleet by 75% will further revolutionise train travel to Europe. Increasing passenger capacity will in turn allow more travellers to take overland journeys and reduce their carbon emissions.
In the past year alone, our customers collectively saved more than 2,200 tonnes of carbon by choosing flight-free travel. These aren’t marginal gains, they're signs of a fundamental shift in how people want to experience the world. Travellers are craving richer, more responsible journeys that only overland travel can offer.
Across the UK, travellers are waking up to the fact that choosing the lower-carbon option doesn’t mean giving anything up, but instead allows them to experience the joy of the journey itself.
Travelling overland invites people to reimagine what it means to journey, putting less emphasis on the destination and more on the route itself, be it the landscapes unfolding as you gaze out the window or the gradual shift in language, architecture and cuisine while crossing borders.
Travelling this way allows for true immersion, transforming transit into experience and restoring a sense of connection to the journey and the people we meet along the way.
Eurostar Celestia will accelerate that change even further, opening the door to a network of experiences that are both exciting and sustainable.
'People not only care about where they're going, but how they get there'
For Byway, innovations like these mean we can craft even more ambitious routes for seamless journeys to Europe by rail with smaller carbon impact. With every new rail connection and every step forward in comfort and accessibility, the ceiling for what’s possible gets higher.
Looking ahead, the potential for direct rail travel is extraordinary. With better infrastructure, improved booking tools and growing consumer appetite, we could soon see train travel become effortless and more affordable, encouraging the replacement of a significant portion of short-haul flights across the continent.
Excitingly, the requests Byway receives for personalised overland travel are becoming increasingly ambitious, with recent routes stretching as far as Georgia and as remote as Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen Island in Norway. The possibilities of overland travel, with increased investment, are boundless.
With investments like this from Eurostar, train and overland travel is becoming increasingly attractive and aspirational for those who care not only about where they’re going, but how they get there.
