Hays Travel confirmed its shop near the station in Gordon Street would remain closed "until further notice" following the fire at Union Corner on Sunday (8 March). Barrhead Travel has also shut its Gordon Street store.
Glasgow City Council said the fire started at the B-listed Victorian building on the corner of Union Street and Gordon Street at around 3.45pm and quickly tore through the four-story building, prompting a large-scale response from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
Eighteen fire appliances were sent to tackle the fire, with crews working through the night to bring the blaze under control. No injuries were reported, while the building has been almost completely destroyed.
"It is very upsetting to see the damage the fire has caused to the heart of Glasgow City Centre," said council leader Susan Aitken. "The priorities of all those working at and behind the scenes are keeping everyone safe and supporting those immediately affected."
Posting to Facebook, Hays Travel’s Glasgow Central team confirmed they had been relocated to the brand's Rutherglen site following the incident. "We will keep all our customers updated when the shop can reopen via Facebook, and we appreciate everyone's understanding at this time," read the post.
Barrhead Travel's Gordon Street store has also remained closed since Sunday. President Jacqueline Dobson told TTG the agency was "monitoring the situation" and prioritising staff safety, with team members either relocated or working from home.
"We are deeply saddened by the impact the fire has had on the many local business owners affected and our thoughts are with everyone in the local community during this difficult time," she said. "Our colleagues in the Gordon Street store were fortunately not impacted on Sunday, as the station evacuation took place later in the evening."
Dobson added there was currently no confirmed timeframe for the store reopening.
