The Times of India said that the carrier will introduce flights to Newark from August 15. If it reinstates services, the carrier will be the only non-UK or US airline flying from Heathrow to the US. The only other carrier with these rights, Kuwait Airways, no longer picks up passengers at Heathrow during the stopover. Air India, however, retains rights to offer London-New York fares.
Air India suspended its New York JFK service eight years ago, but retained the rights to offer the route to the UK market. The new flight will be an extension of the current service from the Gujurat city of Ahmedabad on India’s east coast. This Boeing 787 service currently operates via Mumbai, but will become direct.
The New York flight does not seem to be in Air India’s online booking system yet, but reports indicate a 12.30 departure from Heathrow and a 15.00 arrival at Newark, with a 00.20 departure from New York, arriving at 12.05 on one of the three days. On the two other frequencies, the flight will leave New York at 22.30, arriving in London at 10.15.
